THE FIFTH GRADE FLYER
November
13, 2008
Dear Parents,
As
Thanksgiving approaches we will again have the opportunity to share some of our
blessings with those who are less fortunate.
RCS will be collecting
non-perishable items for donation to a local food bank. Please plan to send your donations to school
on November 24 or 25. We will be having
our Thanksgiving Chapel on Tuesday afternoon.
I am sending home Scholastic book and software orders today that
will be due next week Friday. That way I can place the order before the
Thanksgiving weekend, and the orders will be back well before Christmas. Books and software make great gifts! If you would like to order Christmas gifts
from one or more of the offers just indicate that on the order form or with a note,
and I’ll find a way to get the order to you without your child knowing about
it. Please
make sure your child’s name is on the order form when you send it in, and
please send in exact change or make out your check to me.
In His service,
Linda Cieminis
Peek
at the Week
From Mrs. Cieminis…
Reading—Today we finished reading On My Honor,
and we now will review and prepare for the
test on the novel which will be next week Friday, November 21. The students need to study their novel packet
and be prepared to answer questions on vocabulary, literary elements, and the
plot of the story. We will also write a
practice essay to prepare for the test’s short essay question. Your student will receive information about
this month’s book report project next.
Part of it will due on Friday, December 5, and then we will learn how to
write a book review. If your child
spends a little extra time “polishing” the review I will submit it to the
newspaper for possible publication in Wednesday’s “Our Towns” section.
English—We will finish up our unit on nouns next week
and take a test on Tuesday, November, 18. We are also working on the essay about our
favorite season. Today the students
learned about writing introductory and concluding paragraphs. Now they need to write the first draft of
their 5-paragraph essay.
Spelling—We will take our third and final spelling
test on the vocabulary words from On My Honor tomorrow. The
students need to study all of the words for tomorrow’s test.
Math—Today we finished the new material in this
unit on division with 2-digit divisors.
Next, the students will have review assignments and a practice test to
prepare them for next week Wednesday’s
chapter test.
Science—Tomorrow we will be taking the test on
our current chapter of study—“Earth, Moon, and Beyond.” I hope your child has been studying his/her
vocabulary words and review packet this week since I have taken all the test
questions from those two sources. Next,
we will move into Physical Science with a chapter on the properties of matter.
From Mr. Dawson…
Social
Studies—It’s hard to believe
that the days have arrived when we are doing the NYS SS test! The students have worked hard to get to this
moment, and I have been praying that they wouldn’t be too worked up over it and
that they could relax through the process.
I’ll correct the tests as quickly as I can even while we move onto the
next chapter in our book. We may be
able to squeeze it all in (including a chapter test) before Thanksgiving
break. I’ll let you know next week,
though.
Bible—The students did very well on the first part
of their memorizing John 1:1-14. The
next verses in this passage are due on Tuesday, Nov. 25. They are John 1:6-14. Please check them over the next week and a
half. In class we are just beginning
our work on Unit 5 which is about Jesus’ earthly ministry.
